Lakshadweep Tourism

Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is one of the most spectacular tropical island systems in the world. Lakshadweep, formerly Laccadives, is a group of islands located 200-440 km off the western coast of India in the Arabian Sea.

Surrounded by the Arabian Sea and located about 200 kilometres off the western coast of Kerala, the Lakshadweep Islands are the smallest territory in the Indian Union and are located just two meters above sea level. Lakshadweep is the smallest union territory of India, covering only 32 km2, and one of the two administrative divisions of India with a Muslim majority (the other is Jammu and Kashmir).

Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is an archipelago of 36 islands spread over a large area of the Arabian Sea off the southwest coast of India. Lakshadweep is an idyllic archipelago consisting of 36 islands, 10 of which are inhabited, spread over an area of 32 square kilometres in the Arabian Sea some 200 kilometres off the southwest coast of the Indian peninsula. Lakshadweep, known as the Laccadives, is an archipelago of 36 islands located off the southwest coast of India in the Arabian Sea. The name Lakshadweep means "one hundred thousand islands" in Malayalam, although the 36 islands are only part of an archipelago of no more than a hundred islands.

Lakshadweep

Most of the inhabitants of Lakshadweep are descended from immigrants from the Malabar coast in southwestern India, and the islanders are ethnically similar to the Marari people on the coast of Kerala. The indigenous population is ethnically similar to the Malays of the nearest Indian state of Kerala. The inhabitants of these islands are ethnically similar to the inhabitants of the Indian coast of Kerala, with mixed Indian and Arab ancestry.

With a total area of only 32 square kilometres, Coral Scrolls is inhabited by a predominantly Muslim society where families make a living by growing and harvesting coconuts. Outside of mainland India, the 36 islands are virtually unknown, with almost no Western tourists, spartan infrastructure, limited access, and largely unexplored surfing potential. To visit the ten inhabited islands, an entry permit issued by the Lakshadweep administration is required.

Lakshadweep

Tourism is closely watched to protect the fragile ecosystems of the 36 islands, and a permit is required to travel to Lakshadweep. As the 36 islands are located in the tropics and extend into the equatorial belt, the islands have a tropical climate, becoming more equatorial in the southern islands of the Union Territory. Geological surveys have shown that almost all of the atolls in the Lakshadweep archipelago are oriented northeast-southwest, with low-lying coral islands on the eastern edge and reefs on the western edge, surrounded by vast shallow lagoons.

Lakshadweep India, the 36 atolls and coral reefs that make up the outlying territory of the Lakshadweep Union are an extension of the more famous group of islands in the Maldives. Lakshadweep is the only coral atolls in India that are geologically part of the same range as the Maldives.

Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is a single territory of the Union and includes 12 atolls, three reefs, five submerged coasts and ten inhabited islands. Lakshadweep is an archipelago of 36 islands in the Arabian Sea, located at a distance of 200 to 440 km (120 to 270 miles) from the coast of Malabar. The survival of the Lakshadweep Islands depends primarily on the marine life and resources scattered around the island over 400,000 square kilometres, said Abhilash, who has done several studies on atmospheric issues affecting the Arabian Sea.

The rise in sea levels caused by global warming is also having a strong impact on the beaches and sand dunes of the archipelagos. The alarming loss of coral reefs has already been fatal for 16 atolls and 32 islands, according to Munir Manikfan, diabetologist and vice president of the board of Minicoy, an island in southern Lakshadweep.

Lakshadweep

Experts often point out that the illegal trade in marine resources is a major problem facing the Lakshadweep Islands and, as a result, endangered sea cucumbers in the reef areas are under threat.

As an effective strategy to avoid burdening the environment, tourism development efforts have been synchronized with Lakshadweep's capabilities. Some packages offered by SPORTS include onboard accommodation and day trips to Lakshadweep.

Tourists stay in Kavaratti for four nights and five days, visiting an island each day for water sports and other activities. MV Kavaratti is mainly used to operate the Samudram Cruise Package of the Society for the Promotion of Tourism and Nature (SPORTS), which is run by Lakshadweep, although the ship also transports passengers from Kochi to and between islands.

The Jesseri dialect is spoken on the inhabited islands of Lakshadweep (), namely the islands of Amindiwi and Laccadive, with the exception of the island of Minicoy, [7] where the Mal dialect is used.

Resorts on the inhabited islands of Lakshadweep cannot provide liquor, which is only allowed at resorts on the uninhabited island of Bangaram. The Islamic culture of the Lakshadweep is very conservative and, to quote tradition, the locals are mostly closed off to foreigners. In Lakshadweep, the locals do not live in the slums or on the beaches.

Lakshadweep

Other changes are surprising given that 97% of Lakshadweep's population is Muslim. Over the past fifteen weeks, Lakshadweep has become an example of a kind of contradiction that is becoming incessant.

The city of Kavarati under investigation is located on the easternmost island and is the capital and administrative centre of Lakshadweep, the United Territory of India. Pitti Island has been declared a bird sanctuary and is Lakshadweep's only protected network area covering 0.03% of the territory's geographic area. Sridhar Radhakrishnan, an environmental campaigner based in Thiruvananthapuram, stressed that the Lakshadweep Islands requirement for responsible tourism is minimal and prudent given the wider interests of the local community.
